Running on trails instead of pavement is appealing for many rea-sons. Trail running allows you to escape into nature, providing an experience very different from running in the city. In addition, the softer surfaces of trails are less stressful for the body’s joints and ligaments.
Although soft, trails are often uneven and rugged. Trail-running footwear, while similar to running shoes, is specialized for these surfaces. Outsoles have deeper lugs and more rubber for addi-tional grip, and lugs are multidirectional for both stopping and starting. More layers of material on the upper mean increased protection, while reinforced heel and toe areas prevent injuries. Upper colors are typically bright and trendy.
