SCOPE AND HERITAGE
Since first launching as the athletic branch of Bata International in 1971, the Power brand has advanced steadily. The footwear brand grew from the use of its trademark Flash in 1971 and came into its own in 1979 with the official Power name and identity. Power provides superior functionality to the consumer without sacrificing form. Initially making a name for itself with football shoes, the brand was chosen as the official sports shoe of the 1986 FIFA World Cup of Football in Mexico City. Today, Power’s “Bata Bullets” basketball hightops and “Bata Wilson” tennis shoes are highly prized by collectors of vintage footwear. The company commitment to accessibility, quality and style has ensured the brand’s growth — Power shoes are now found on the feet of both recreational and performance athletes in more than 20 countries worldwide.
With the formation of Power International in 1991, global business activities were consolidated in Toronto, Canada. In 2002 it became a fully registered Canadian company, taking the name Power Athletics Ltd. The move to a centralized business model has been crucial to the continued expansion of the brand, enabling the company to hone its sales and marketing activities and to strengthen its dedication to product design. Demonstrating its endorsement of the Japanese philosophy of “Kaizen” — growth through continuous improvement — the company has assembled a skilled squad of industrial designers and footwear specialists that operates from the company’s Toronto headquarters to design all Power Athletics Ltd. shoes. Power consistently brings an ethos of hard work, innovation, and collaboration to the table.
Always athlete-focused, Power enlists both tradition and innovation in its mission to provide superior footwear to users. By going directly to the source and working with the very people who wear the shoes — the athletes themselves — Power creates high-calibre sport-specific shoes for enthusiasts and pros alike. The brand’s commitment to helping athletes of every skill level achieve peak performance has led to rewarding associations with collaborators such as:
- Legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden;
- NBA champion “Downtown” Fred Brown;
- MLB stars Lloyd Moseby and Hall-of-Famer Dave Winfield;
- Eight-time Ironman World Champion triathlete Paula Newby-Fraser and triathlete Lynne McAllister;
- Unbeatable squash superstar Jahangir Khan and the World Professional Squash Association;
- Television fitness guru Sharon Mann;
- Celebrity dance choreographer Wade Robson;
- Pro skaters, including Willy Santos, Jesse Landen, James Craig, Dayne Brummet, Mike Crum, and the late Josh Evin.
Power’s baseline goals are twofold: to provide superior value to the consumer and to position itself in the marketplace as the world’s leading producer of mid-priced athletic shoes. The latter is achievable by offering high-end value to consumers at mid-range price points and by increasing the number of niche markets the company serves. Committed to design innovation and consumer satisfaction Power is dedicated to growing the brand within traditional areas of strength and through well-planned incursions into new markets. Power looks to the future with enthusiasm — and the certainty that the Power Flash will be coming soon to a pair of shoes near you!
